Eat Chay is created by two food lovers. Liz and Joe were born in Hanoi (Vietnam) and Hong Kong respectively and both now call London home.
'In Vietnamese, chay means vegetarian or vegan. At Eat Chay, we put a modern twist on the traditional Vietnamese comfort dishes by stripping away the use of animal products, letting fruits and vegetables, herbs and spices shine on their own.
During the 18th century, The French arrived in Vietnam and brought along with them the heavy use of meat, dairy and wine in daily cooking. While this influence has created new layers of flavours that define modern Vietnamese food, we want to preserve the creative use of herbs, spices and vegetables. Our food is an homage to pre-colonial Vietnamese cuisine.
Vietnam is well known for their beef pho noodle soup and banh mi baguette, but there is so much more to this cuisine. We would like to dedicate our first supper club to telling the story of our hometown’s food and to introducing you to the dishes of our childhood. You’ll get to taste our aunties’ secret recipes, find out the difference between Northern and Southern food and learn about the French influence on tradition Vietnamese dishes.'
